But this comes at a cost: the squeezed bag became the bottleneck of the entire airflow system. To overcome the resistance, Xiaoyu must inhale with strong force. While the hypoxia was somewhat alleviated, the physical and mental exhaustion only grew more intense… Time had finally reached the pre-set thirty minutes—of course, Xiaoyu had no sense of time—and I closed the valve on the rebreather bag for the last time. Then I watched as Xiaoyu, completely unaware and with her consciousness already blurred for a long while, enacted her final struggle.
